Hiring: Traffic Controller

As a Traffic Controller, you will be responsible for setting up, maintaining and removing of temporary traffic control sites.



Position Duties


Main duties will consist of but not be limited to:

  • Perform all tasks associated with traffic management for site works or events.
  • Must perform all duties in accordance with the Tasmanian Traffic Control for works on Roads Tasmanian Guide.
  • Participate in professional development of updating and maintaining industry knowledge and licences required to perform the duties of a Traffic Controller.


Daily duties will consist of but not be limited to:

  • Completing vehicle pre-start checks.
  • Loading and un-loading vehicles with signage and associated devices using safe lifting technique.
  • Accurately complete daily Traffic Management Records, ensuring that all variations, modifications or adjustments to a traffic management plan are recorded and authorised.
  • Accurately complete TMRS (record sheets), including precise reporting of times, signage and devices used per job.
  • Accurately measure distance using vehicle odometer, measuring wheel, or other means of measuring.
  • Accurately layout a traffic management scheme in accordance with basic rules, from generic traffic control diagram or formal traffic management plan.
  • Accurately complete SWMS and implement control measures to suit the site.
  • Accurately and regularly complete site checks and monitor traffic behaviour and or flow to ensure safety is maintained at all times.
  • Obey instructions from crew leaders, foreman, managers, auditors or officials.
  • Driving and towing, inclusive of extended reversing with an arrow board or visual message board.
  • Care and maintenance of signage at the end of shift.
  • Filling and loading of sandbags.
  • Cleaning vehicles and signage at the end of shift.
  • Perform all other duties to control traffic, pedestrians and cyclists to protect maintenance workers, work crews and members of the public.
  • Cooperate with all health and safety policies and procedures of the company and take all reasonable care to ensure that your actions or omissions do not impact on the health and safety of yourself or others.
  • Observation and reporting of any concerns or safety risks to Traffic and Labour Manager.


Conditions of Work

  • Work is generally alongside active roads and highways.
  • Work can also be on bridges and overpasses.
  • The majority of work is outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Work is also performed under conditions that may expose staff to dust, smoke, electricity, rail traffic, loud noise and uneven footing and other associated work site conditions.
  • During the course of your duties you may be subject to verbal abuse from motorists. We do not condone this action but realise we cannot control the actions of the public. Our staff our expected not to retaliate in any situation such as this and are expected to act in a professional manner at all times and not permit themselves to be provoked.
  • You will be required to wear the appropriate PPE such as hi visibility company logo vests, hard hats, sunscreen, ear protection and safety glasses.

Skills and attribute requirements

  • Must be able to read, follow and comprehend road traffic diagrams, regulations and instructions.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to clearly communicate, by radio, telephone and in person, and have good listening skills.
  • The position requires regular physical manual effort. You will be required to stand for 8 hour to 10 hours per day handling stop-slow bat, or managing other similar traffic control signs and devices, regardless of weather conditions.
  • Must be able to repeatedly lift 15 – 20 kg.
  • Must be able to manage own time and scheduled required breaks without impeding safety on the site.
  • Ability to operate in a team environment and assist all team members in the performance of their duties. You will be required to work closely with a co-worker/s to ensure the safe management of work zones or events for all Spectran customers.
  • Willingness and capacity to implement required health and safety policies and procedures
  • Ability and capacity to monitor the implementation and effectiveness of the safety management system.
